It’ll be my first time in North America. Flying in and out of Boston 12-26 July. Next stop: what to do during those two weeks? I’m planning on renting a Crown Vic Mustang and circle lake Ontario and visit Maine. Nothing concrete planned just yet. Any suggestions that aren’t the obvious answers of a google search?

The Boston area isn’t the best (rust) in buying a very American vehicle and shipping it to Europe I bet. The port itself is if I’m not mistaken.

What drew me to Boston? The fact that my girlfriend is attending a conference there between 9-11 July or so. As someone who doesn’t like too much heat it looks like a good location for a summer holiday as well.

Just to warn you, they have really weird accents up around Boston and Maine.

You know this, but if you’re looking for cars to export, you’re on the wrong coast.

I know. I’m not coming over to import cars, my girlfriend has a conference in Boston before I arrive (two way ticket: €450!) and we’re planning on two weeks of touristy things. Cars are more of a tertiary thing to look into.

If your coming to my state, good luck with the drivers. Also Visit the Larz Anderson Museum in Brookline http://larzanderson.org/ . The Lawn events on the weekends are great. http://larzanderson.org/2016-lawn-even…

Also try not to get mugged.

What are you interested in? What drew you to Boston in particular? There’s a lot of American history in this area, since the Revolutionary War started here.

Maine is a wonderful place to visit. In July, make sure you drive to and from there during the week, NOT on a weekend. Otherwise you’ll be stuck in nasty traffic through New Hampshire and southern Maine.

I don’t know about circling Lake Ontario, other than that I’ve had the same idea myself but haven’t gotten around to it. But I’ve lived in Mass all my life except for 7 years in Maine, so if you have specific questions about either of these areas, feel free to ask.

I tried to get to Maine once, went to Niagara falls then tried going west, mostly without looking at the map. Ended up just driving around New York for a few days, but it was my first time through Watkins Glen and the Adirondacks, they were neat. I lost it trying to get into Vermont, foiled by the ferry, it was pulling out as I was pulling in. It was still a neat trip though, I’ll make it to Maine some day.

Understand when you are in Maine that being told you are, “From Away” it’s just their way of saying, “You wouldn’t understand.” It may be used to discount your opinion, but most often it’s used to stubbornly cling to a quirk of Maine.

In July you have to see Acadia National Park. Plan to spend a day there.

In Boston get some pastries in the North End.

Other than that, do what you want, haha.

I’m a nature guy, despite working in NYC, so for me any trip is going to get try to get away from as much concrete as possible.

Spend at least one night in Manhattan so you can see the city. Stay at the Beacon Hotel, Upper West Side, close to the red line train. Reasonable prices, nice people. Hit The Metropolitan, The Guggenheim, Eisenberg’s for an egg cream - oy, if you decide to come I’ll make you a list. And The Intrepid - we have a space shuttle!

If you’re going to take a long trip up to Maine, visit Bar Harbor, a beautiful area. All of northern New England is great if you’re looking for a chance to get out into the woods, and New Hampshire and Vermont are a little closer to Massachusetts.

When you’re in Boston, you have the Freedom Trail and the USS Constitution as typical touristy things. Also see the aquarium, it’s a good one. Since you’re here a while, do a few more local-ish things...in the city I’d recommend going to the SoWa market on Sunday and getting hipster truck food. When in the broader Massachusetts area, it’s worth getting out of the city a bit. Try to drive down to Cape Cod (but do it during the week otherwise the traffic will destroy you), or drive down south and go to Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.

I’ve lived in Boston for 22 years (discontinuous), but am surprisingly devoid of better tourist recommendations. If you want places to eat or drink though, I know those.

Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, there’s an indoor/outdoor cart racing track just outside the city called F1 Boston, and you’re always welcome to come take a drive down to Martha’s Vineyard and we can go drive my Jeep on the beach and go fishing or something.

There’s also Battleship Cove in Fall River, Ma. They have some WW2 battleships and a submarine that you can go onboard and explore.

Two hours out of the city is New Hampshire Motor Speedway, if there's a NASCAR event on while you're here you definitely need to go see it.

The Welland Canal is pretty cool to check out. It is right near Niagra Falls on the west end of Lake Ontario and usually has quite a bit of ship traffic going through the locks. They have some good viewing areas and you can get right up close to the locks.

The Kancamagus Highway between Lincoln and Conway New Hampshire is also worth checking out. You can stop and swim along the way in a pretty cool spot where there is a natural water slide.

I am. Nothing I’m not used to. According to google maps Boston-Niagara Falls is a significantly shorter distance (but takes about just as long) as a one way trip from my home to my girlfriend. On this side of the Atlantic I drive those 880 km/550 miles in one go in 8 hours including stops, as a tourist I’d spread those 470 miles out over two or even three days.

More serious answers about things to do:

Kinja'd!!!

Watch NASCAR! The top two national series and some local series will be in New Hampshire July 15-17, and the track is only 135 km from the Boston airport. Tickets are here or any scalping marketplace.

Kinja'd!!!

Watch baseball! Major league teams around you will be in Boston and New York. A reasonable distance afield you will find teams in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. There are also professional minor-league teams all over that part of the country. Pictured above is the stadium for the Sea Dogs of Portland, Maine, which play in the third level of the Baseball Pyramid. Major league tickets are expensive; minor league tickets are cheap. In Portland, you can buy a ticket with all-you-can-eat concessions for $26.

Kinja'd!!!

Visit the USS Constitution in Boston. It probably won’t sail while you are there, but it is docked in Boston and they do fire the cannons. FYI: It visited the Netherlands while hunting British shipping during the War of 1812.

Not sure where you’re planning on driving on the south side of Lake Ontario but upstate New York is nice. There’s some nice hiking in the Adirondack Mountains/Lake Placid (‘80 winter olympics) if you’re into that sort of thing. I can recommend a place to stay if you decide to make that part of your trip.

If you plan on going through New Hampshire, I would recommend driving the Kancamagus and Bear Notch road. Bear Notch road ends at a Ski Resort that has several fun summer activities that you can do. You could also go to New England Dragway in Epping, NH, as the NHRA is hosting an event during the time that you’re in New England.

Also, I would recommend going to the Larz Anderson museum. It’s a great but small car museum. It’s just half an hour outside of Boston.

I live an hour south of Boston. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything worth shipping overseas that hasn’t been eaten by rust. Anything that hasn’t, you’ll most likely pay twice what it’s really worth for just being a solid car in Massachusetts.

While you’re in Boston, just walk around, you’ll find heaps of things to do. The New England Aquarium is nice, and there’s whale watches departing from the port just to the left. Faneuil Hall is definitely worth a trip. Full of restaurants and shops, you could easily waste half a day there. Chinatown is an interesting place to go if just to take in the sights. I’d avoid the food there unless you go to this hole in the wall called the Golden Gate. Holy crap, best Chinese food you’ll ever have. There’s the Science museum, you could get a ride on one of the Duck Tours trucks where it gives you a tour of Boston by land and sea. You could catch a Red Sox Game at Fenway Park, watch the Celtics or Bruins at the TD Bank Garden, journey slightly north to Somerville and check out Assembly Row which has lots of restaurants, shops, and a Legoland Discovery Center. The north end has endless options for good Italian food. You could ride the subway, or as we call it the T, to just about everywhere in the area. If you’re into slightly less-mainstream stuff, check out Harvard Square. Lots of parks, shopping and food there too. Just south of Boston are the Blue Hills. Great for hiking, and you can get a beautiful view of the entire city of Boston.

Also, don’t be a stereotypical Boston tourist and ask anyone if they “pahk the cah in the Hahvahd yahd”.
Parking in Harvard Yard is illegal.

I live close to the state capital of Augusta. It’s in the lower 1/4 of the state.

I second another poster saying you should visit bar harbor. If you’re coming up 95 you should stop into the Portland and more specifically the Old Port and there are some cool old forts in Cape Elizabeth right in the next town over.

No pressure to meet just figured I’d extend the hospitality to a fellow Opponaught.
